National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER)

NCCER develops standardized construction and maintenance curriculum and assessments with portable credentials. NCCER’s workforce development process of accreditation, instructor certification, standardized curriculum, registry, assessment and certification is a key component in the industry’s workforce development efforts.

In Bermuda, the Construction Association of Bermuda is the Accredited Training Sponsor (ATS). That means that all local NCCER training and training facilities must be approved and monitored by the CAOB. CAOB offers training for NCCER Master Trainers and NCCER Certified Instructors on a periodic basis.

Core Curriculum: NCCER’s Core Curriculum is a prerequisite for all NCCER training. It offers nine modules that are the foundation for Craft training. Note that NCCER uses the term ‘Craft’ while some may be more familiar with ‘Trade’ or ‘Applied Technology.’ Core uses a combination of classroom and practical teaching for a total of 80 instruction hours. Students sit two exams at the end of each module; one is multiple choice and the other is a practical (hands-on) exam. Upon completion of Core, students receive an NCCER Wallet Card and a Certificate and are entered into the NCCER’s Automated National Registry (ANR) from which future employers can verify student credentials.  In Bermuda, Core can be completed at The Berkeley Institute and CedarBridge Academy as well as the Bermuda College.

Craft Training: NCCER has more than 60 Craft certification courses. Several are offered in Bermuda, the most popular being: HVAC, Plumbing, Carpentry, Drywall, Welding and Electronic Systems Technician. Demand dictates whether or not courses are run.
